3 Tips for the first day at work

Are you someone that landed your first job in the corporate world?

Or someone that took a long break from the workforce and is a bit rusty on what to do on your first day?

If you are like me, you are feeling a mix of emotions. The excitement and nervousness of landing a new job and hoping to make a good impression with your colleagues.

When I compare myself with new starters, I notice there were steps that set themselves apart immediately from other rookies that joined the workforce.

These small things would make their transition smoother into the workforce.

If you don’t want to risk looking like a rookie, follow these 3 practical steps

1. Upload your profile picture in all your work channels

Living in a digital age, it's more important than ever to have a profile picture.

With the majority of people having flexible work schedules, working remote or even different timezones, people don’t always have the luxury of meeting people face to face.

Why is it important? It's important for your colleges to get an understanding of who they are talking to. It will make collaborating with others easier especially if you haven’t met them before.

Don’t be that person that uses a default profile picture.

Remember that your first impression is not always on a video call or face to face, it just might be through a slack message or people having a glance at your Outlook’s profile.

2. Add your email signature

Think of your email signature as being the equivalent of your business card. It communicates your role, which part of the organisation you work with and most importantly your name.

Most companies will have a standard email signature you must use.

If you are not sure, ask someone or have a look at your teammates' email signature and use that.

<Job title>

<Branch>

<Company Name>

<Add your work or personal number>

3. Prepare an elevator pitch

In the next few weeks or even months, you will be introducing yourself to a lot of people. I mean a lot of people. You don’t want to be caught off guard and ramble a rubbish introduction of yourself.

Instead take the time to really prepare a small 30-second speech of who you are, your role and communicate your excitement to be involved in this team.
